objectives

Endoscopic mucosal resection(EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD) is one of treatment of early gastric cancer(EGC). But the rate of additional gastrectomy was increased after EMR or ESD. The aim of this study was to analyze the problems of patients who were performed gastrectomy after EMR or ESD.

methods

From Jenuary 1998 to August 2008, 64 patients was performed gastrectomy after EMR or ESD. We analyzed clinicopathological features of this patients retrospectively.

results

Most of all patient that performed within 1 year were stage Ia. But patient that performed after 1 year from endoscopic treatment were that 9 patients were stage Ia, 2 patients were stage Ib, one patiens was stage II, and one patient was stage IV.

conclusions

Additional gastrectomy should be performed if the result of EGC treatment was not complete after EMR or ESD. Although the result of endoscopic treatment was complete, regular and strict follow up study is inevitable because of recurrence and  false completeness. So, we should be careful that apply the endoscopic treatment to EGC and expansion to indication.
